Aussitôt critiqué par l'opinion publique nationale, l'effort de guerre américain s'intensifia considérablement au milieu des années 60, sans parvenir pour autant à faire basculer l'issue du conflit. À partir de 1970, sous la présidence de R. Nixon, un processus de cessez-le-feu fut engagé, aboutissant au retrait des troupes américaines en 1973. Un an plus tard, le sud du pays passa aux mains des communistes. Véritable traumatisme national, la guerre du Viêt-nam est l'un des épisodes les plus pénibles de l'histoire des États-Unis. La longueur du conflit, les atrocités commises de part et d'autre, le nombre très élevé de victimes, mais surtout les interrogations sur la finalité de cette guerre remirent radicalement en question la légitimité de l'intervention américaine et provoquèrent chez les jeunes Américains de l'époque un mouvement antimilitariste d'une ampleur sans précédent. -
